Saffron Supper Club, our favorite pop-up dinner club, took over the dining room at Byblos on May 15 for an unforgettable Persian New Year celebration. This ode to Nowruz featured an array of traditional New Year dishes along with top sellers from the Mediterranean restaurant’s regular menu.
Before dinner in the upstairs dining hall, guests convened on the Miami Beach restaurant’s first floor for welcome cocktails and an array of small bites, including black truffle pide and duck kibbeh. Soon after, attendees sat down to enjoy a delicious three-course, family-style feast cooked up by Chef de Cuisine Nelson Fernandez and his team.
The evening started with crispy artichokes, lamb rolls and the Byblos’ famous Turkish Manti dumplings (smokey eggplant, yogurt sauce and molasses). The second courses — chargrilled Cornish hen, pan fried branzino, Persian sabzi rice and roasted Brussels sprouts — resulted in very happy taste buds, and the final course, comprised of yogurt mousse and chocolate mousse, made for a sweet ending to the evening. Each course was paired with a delectable Italian wine from Zonin1821.
But food was just one component of Saffron Supper Club’s latest event. Between courses, patrons were treated to poetry readings and anecdotes surrounding the Persian New Year, which helped explain the live goldfish on dinner tables as well as the other Persian goodies present throughout the restaurant.
