In the past few months, we’ve gone on and on about how Downtown Doral is transforming the area’s food scene. With all the press surrounding that new community, it’s easy to forget that the city is making culinary strides elsewhere. One of those places: Dolphin Mall.
While a mall might seem like one of the last places to find a good restaurant, Dolphin Mall is making an effort to appeal to diners by extending their outdoor Ramblas Plaza and adding several new eateries. Among the additions is Burger & Beer Joint, whose South Florida locations include Brickell, South Beach, West Palm Beach and Pembroke Pines.
When burger and beer are in your name, those items better be good. Thankfully, this latest B&B outpost brought their A game, delivering delicious gourmet burgers, cool drinks and some epic desserts.
If you’ve never been to a Burger & Beer Joint, everything you need to know is in the name. The place offers a plethora of burger options and tons of beers with a rock and roll vibe. What do we mean by a rock and roll vibe? One example: the burger list, where you’ll spy musical references everywhere like Freebird (1/2 lb. turkey burger, swiss cheese, grilled onions, sautéed portobello mushrooms, onion bun, skinny fries) and Paradise City (1/2 lb. premium beef blend, poached and seared cajun spiced shrimp, watercress, tarragon remoulade, onion bun, truffle skinny fries).
Those burgers sound hefty, and they are. This is not a place to visit when you’re on a diet. Although there are some salad offerings and healthier burgers, it’s either “go big or go home” here. For starters, opt for the fried pickles or the mini corn dogs. Both tasty options come in ample portions, so just choose one for a party of two. We learned the hard way.
After eating enough fried appetizers to make our doctor worry, it was time for the main event. The Hey Jude is stacked: a 1/2 lb. chicken burger, thick sliced applewood smoked bacon, Havarti cheese, and avocado on a whole wheat bun with honey mustard. Oh yeah, and sweet potato fries (our Kryptonite). Your palate will be dancing from the medley of flavors.
We felt the same way about the Wild Thing: a 1/2 lb. bison burger, tomato jam, bleu cheese, brioche bun, parsley & roasted garlic aioli. The bison and bleu cheese combo blew our mind. Paired with duck fat fries, this selection will definitely make you sing.
If you still have room for dessert after appetizers and burgers, we’re impressed.
The Maroon 5 — decadent, delectable deep fried crispy oreos and vanilla ice cream — made us feel like Animals. We enjoyed it, but This Love had taken its toll on me (sorry) and Dianne in the form of the best nap ever afterward.
At Burger & Beer Joint, your money goes a long way. The food is massive, as is the drink selection. And it’s all great. Just make sure to pace yourself (unlike us), and you’ll have a good time.
