A lot has changed since we visited DIRT earlier this year. But at the same time, a lot hasn’t changed at this Miami Beach farm-to-counter eatery and wellness bar. What’s different: the menu, which is now in full spring/summer mode with colorful, refreshing items to complement the seasons. What’s the same: Chef Nicole Votano’s impeccable ability to create satisfying dishes that are equal parts healthy and delicious.
The first thing that comes to mind when we think of summer is heat, and DIRT provides plenty of hydrating options to get your quench on. Their smoothies are always a great choice, but the season’s standout is the Dirty Palmer. So good it should be illegal, this take on an Arnold Palmer uses grapefruit juice instead of lemonade to host an epic party for your taste buds.
Coffee drinkers, listen up: the lavender latte is your new best friend. Inspired by Chef Votano’s trips to Napa Valley and flavored with Sonoma lavender syrup, the latte just sings with flavor and doesn’t taste syrupy like other flavored coffees we’ve had. It’s perfection in a cup.
Toast can be pretty boring. Thankfully, the toast game is strong at DIRT, a place where boring does not exist. We must warn you that the bread here is massive. Like you-can-split-a-slice-with-two-people-and-probably-be-full massive. The goat cheese and pea toast, which isn’t something that would typically sound appetizing to us, was in fact quite appetizing. Expect plentiful peas and generous swaths of goat cheese; you get your money’s worth.
Collaboration dishes are a staple of DIRT’s menu, and this season’s collab is with JoJo Tea. DIRT and JoJo have developed a bright salad with so many dimensions. Just look at the ingredients list of the DIRT x JoJo Tea Salad by Tico: local greens, broccolini, English peas, Parmigiano Reggiano, asparagus, heirloom carrots and sautéed mushrooms. Then, there’s the JoJo matcha green tea and lemon vinaigrette. THEN, there’s a spike of toasted pumpkin, sunflower and hemp seeds. There’s a lot going on, but it all comes together so nicely once you bite in.
Healthy dishes can be decadent, too, though. Case in point: the Dirty Steak + Cheese. This monstrous sandwich is a year-round staple and packs in butcher’s cut grass-fed steak, loads of Monterey Jack cheese, caramelized onions and a few other goodies. It certainly lives up to its name; it’s messy, but worth the plethora of napkins you’ll use to navigate this gooeyness.
Not in the mood for cleanup but looking for something just as hearty? Make the Spring Plate your go-to meal. Crisp broccolini, lemon, chili flakes and the most amazingly fragrant potatoes you’ll ever encounter are on this dish, along with Greek yogurt, olive oil and fresh herbs. We had high hopes for this considering our past experience with the seasonal plate, and it did not disappoint.
If you think that dessert is an afterthought and/or nonexistent at a healthy place like this, you are wrong.
Eat the chocolate chip cookie and matcha green tea cake — and then eat your words. Just kidding. But seriously, don’t miss out on the dessert display on the way out. There’s something for everyone, whether you want a tiny treat or something that will have you in the gym the rest of the day.
Another season, another menu. Another menu, another winner. DIRT continues to impress with extensive offerings rooted in quality. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for fall.
