It took a little over seven months, but we found it: our favorite meal of 2016 (so far). A temporary pop up at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, Pizza & Burger has a permanent place in our hearts.
This summer concept at Michael Mina 74 combines two things we love — guess which two — and improves on them exponentially. While the vibe is relaxed and casual like your traditional backyard gathering, the food is some next-level deliciousness.
The minute you walk down the staircase to the restaurant, you can smell the ketchup, fries and other scents reminiscent of a BBQ. By the time you’re at the table, odds are that you’re salivating. And if you aren’t, one look at the menu will take care of that.
As you’ve probably figured out by now, pizzas and burgers are the stars here. But before you dive headfirst into these delights, get a barrel-aged cocktail — specifically the Cubano Sato. Zacapa and Facundo Neo rums, maraschino and grapefruit bitters fuse for a dynamic drink worthy of your palate. It’s a sensational libation that’s perfect to sip while playing UNO at the table. Oh yeah, this place has UNO cards to keep you entertained while you wait for your food. #wherehaveyoubeenallmylife
Our advice to you: get a salad. While this may seem like the wrong thing to do at a place called Pizza & Burger, creating our own Market Salad was a fun experiment that paid off dividends in taste. The greens here are super fresh and yummy, and the portion for the table is HUGE.
You know what else is huge? The Wings — both in size and flavor. These are not for the faint of heart; they pack a lot of heat, but if you make it through the fire, you’ll be rewarded with crispy, tasty bird. The pickled apple helps cut the spice a bit, but sensitive eaters may want to look elsewhere; our friends rave about The Toast (sourdough, house-made ricotta, black pepper honey toasted pecans, proscuitto, stone fruit).
On the pizza menu, get The Parmigiano (fried eggplant, meatball, Sunday Sauce basil, whole milk mozzarella) and never look back. It is an insanely good meatball pizza and among the best pizzas we’ve ever had. The fried eggplant blends in with the sausage/meatballs seamlessly and excellently. Throw some crispy dough and a crispy crust plus Sunday sauce into the equation, and we’ve died and gone to heaven. You know it’s good when nobody at the table is saying anything — just chewing and enjoying.
Don’t even get us started on The MM74 (dry-aged steak burger, double smoked bacon, American cheese sauce, lettuce and secret sauce) because we’ll never stop. But if you insist, here’s the tl;dr version: exceptional meat, exceptional seasoning and exceptional fries. Seriously, the fries were out of this world — even the ketchup tasted like a just-opened-brand-new-bottle-of-ketchup ketchup. Once you’re done, put your diet out of its misery with the decadent and delicious Chocolate Ganache Cake. Cue the food coma.
You NEED to visit Pizza & Burger. It is a crime that this pop up is only for the summer. Alas, all good things must come to an end. But until that end, make the most of this amazing concept. We sure will.
