Café Roval: A Charming Addition to Morningside

What was once a historic pump house is now one of Morningside’s most charming restaurants. Late last year, restaurateur Mark Soyka opened Café Roval just a stone’s throw away from his eponymous concept, and it’s taken the neighborhood by storm ever since. The vast venue features an equally vast menu comprised of tasty Mediterranean fare and a creative “cocktail” menu by master mixologist Douglas Beedoo.

Café Roval has something for everyone and for every situation. Here for drinks with friends? Opt for the Mezze, a large spread of falafel, hummus, fried cauliflower and other goodies that’s ideal for sharing bites and conversation. Sitting at the bar for post-work libations? Treat yourself to a round of Roasted Oysters with smoked chile butter (or a just-as-delicious order of Charred Carrots with spiced Greek yogurt). Hot date? The Sea Scallops with roasted red pepper coulis and the Lamb Ribs with Middle Eastern spices and apricot chutney are sure to make your prospective (or current) other half remember this meal fondly.

A spectacular bar program by Beedoo pairs beautifully with all this European-inspired fare. The restaurant can only serve beer and wine, so Beedoo uses reductions and other workarounds to offer guests unique “mixed drink” experiences that are even better than the real thing. The Good Old Days, for example, uses ginger extract, lime, agave nectar, Cinzano Rosso, bourbon barrel stout beer and ginger dust. That sounds like something you’d find at a craft cocktail bar, right?

The rest of the menu features ingredient lists just as extensive and creative, which makes Café Roval’s beer and wine program a cut above the rest. Beedoo isn’t resting on his laurels; he’s continuously working on new cocktails like the KAHLO (golden and cherry tomatoes, maldon syrup, lime, rosemary, El Guitarron “blue agave” fortified wine, habanero water) to blow patrons’ minds and inspire other eateries to step up their beer and wine selections.

With the addition of Café Roval to his restaurant empire, Mark Soyka continues to turn Morningside into a culinary hub. And if this latest concept is any indication, he’s just getting started. We can’t wait to see what’s next.
