Two of our favorite foods are donuts and fried chicken. At Federal Donuts in Wynwood, we can have them both. The Philadelphia-bred concept from James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Solomonov has moved into 250 NW 24th Street and taken the neighborhood by storm with yummy donuts and super-crispy fried chicken.
The shop, which opened last month, is the first location for Federal Donuts outside of Philly. Once inside, guests can choose from an assortment of o-shaped treats, including “Fancy” flavors like Chocolate Eclair and Blueberry Mascarpone as well as “Hot Fresh” varieties like Cinnamon Brown Sugar and Cookie N ‘Cream. The fancy flavors are made fresh every morning and ready to go — they’re perfect for when you’re in a hurry or just want live your cheat day to the fullest.
If you have a few minutes to spare, we do recommend at least trying one of the hot-and-fresh flavors. You don’t want to miss them: A “donut robot” makes them to order, and there’s nothing quite like a just-made donut. It tastes like heaven — and then some. Don’t fill up on just donuts, though. FedNuts knows you need something savory to balance all that sweetness, so they’ve rolled out twice-fried crispy chicken for you to savor.
Starting at 11 a.m. every morning, diners can chow down on the chicken, which is available naked or coated in your preferred glaze or dry seasoning. Our preferred seasoning: Za’atar, the Middle Eastern spice blend. Not too hungry? The $7.50 Fried Chicken Sandwich is a steal. All it takes is one bite of that crunchy chicken breast in house-ranch seasoning to win over your taste buds (and your wallet).
The next time you have a hankering for donuts or fried chicken (or both), Federal Donuts should be on your list. It’s delicious, reasonably priced and helmed by one of the friendliest staffs we’ve ever encountered. And now with the newly opened Dizengoff hummus restaurant right next door, you can kiss your summer body goodbye — it’s totally worth it, though.
