We’ve eaten at a lot of places in our 4-year existence, but there’s one type of eatery that we encounter few and far between: delis. When we want a hearty sandwich, a delicious bagel or a monster sub, there aren’t too many places around Miami that can satisfy those cravings — at least not without us taking a long drive down south.
Thankfully, Hank and Harry’s on Miami Beach doesn’t require much of a trek. And even if you do live on the other side of town, the drive is worth it.
Options abound at Hank and Harry’s, where you can create a 1/2-pound sandwich, wrap, sub or bagel to your liking. Want a stacked NY Hot Corned Beef Sandwich? How about some Bubby’s Brisket? Pick your bread, protein, toppings and condiments, and expect nothing short of a hefty portion. If you’re really hungry or want to knock out lunch and dinner at the same time, go for the Pounder or Combo Pounder — one pound of meat (or meats) in a triple decker sandwich. Don’t say we didn’t warn you about the size.
While customization is certainly welcome at Hank and Harry’s, you can order one of their specialty sandwiches or subs if you can’t make up your mind. The Godfather Sub (ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, sweet peppers, onions, lettuce, tomato, oil, red wine vinegar) is stuffed to the brim, as are all the other selections. Unlike the sandwiches — which come in one huge size — the subs are available as a half portion or full portion. We thought we could handle the full portion, and we were wrong. Larger than a forearm, the sub ended up being our lunch and dinner — and it was great each time.
Our suggestion for first-timers: Start small. Go with one of the half-sandwich or half-sub combos, just so you can get an idea of the portion sizes. Then, graduate to one of the full-size sandwiches or subs. There are also burgers, hot dogs, soups and salads available, along with a bevy of bagels and egg sandwiches for breakfast. As you can see, we weren’t kidding when we said there were a lot of options.
For those who live far from the beach, Hank and Harry’s is opening a second location in South Miami not too far from Sunset Place. This 125-seat outpost will have full sit-down service and offer an expanded menu. Regardless of which location you end up at, we’re sure you’ll leave with a full stomach and a big smile.
