If there’s one word to describe Komodo’s new lunch menu, it’s “wow.” The Brickell eatery, which specializes in Asian cuisine, recently revamped its daytime offerings, and the new selections are outstanding. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick midday meal, a business meeting or just a chill time with friends, you’ll find a variety of options that will make lunch the highlight of your day.
New items comprise all sections of the menu. Small plates, buns, bowls … the menu takes your taste buds on a mouthwatering ride from start to finish. The Stracciatella with housemade baco bread is heaven on a plate. Although it’s meant to be shared, it’s so tasty that you’ll want it all to yourself. If lighter fare is what you want, the Grilled Avocado will hit the spot in terms of flavor, satiety and presentation.
Other small plates we tried were the Spicy Hamachi Crispy Rice and the Spicy Shrimp Tempura. The former was a highlight of the meal: We see crispy rice on pretty much any Asian menu these days, but it’s always with tuna. Here, the spicy hamachi is a nice change of pace. In fact, we prefer it. As for the spicy shrimp tempura, we had one bite and both of us immediately exclaimed, “YES!” In other words, make sure you get it.
You can easily make a meal with just small plates, but there’s so much else you need to try. Get maybe two small plates for the table and an entree each. For a main, we suggest the Peking Duck Banh Mi. At $16, it’s an affordable way to try the restaurant’s famous Peking duck; the duck special normally costs $92. Either way, it’s worth it — the flavors will have your palate dancing.
If you’re trying to be good for lunch, the Thai Skirt Steak Salad packs just as much taste and heft with a lot less guilt. The steak is tender AF, and the lo mein puts the whole dish over the top. It’s a memorable mix of textures and temperatures. You have meat, pasta and veggies all on one plate that alternate between hot and cold. It’s fun.
The Cloud Nine dessert is appropriately named because that’s exactly where you’ll be after you try it. When it lands on your table, take a moment to admire just how beautiful it is. Then, dig in. If “food porn” were a legitimate dictionary entry, a photo of this dessert would appear next to it. Because it’s big and decadent, we only recommend it for larger parties. If you’re just a party of two (like us), odds are you’re going to be too full for it.
Chef Benjamin Goldman and his team have raised the bar in Brickell’s lunch scene. Now whenever someone asks us about a great lunch spot, we suggest Komodo. The new menu checks off all the boxes: affordable pricing, delightful flavors and extensive offerings. We can’t ask for more.
