“Whoa.” That was our reaction after finishing our meal at BLT Steak, the South Beach steakhouse that has a new lease on life inside Iberostar Berkeley Hotel. Back in early 2016, the restaurant closed up shop on Ocean Drive and bid its time to make a triumphant return. If our recent dinner was any indication, BLT Steak 2.0 has succeeded.
Prior to this dinner, it had been a while since we’ve had a meal where every dish was stellar. Then, BLT Steak came along. From start to finish, we were floored by the quality of the food. Our evening began with Popovers, a signature of the BLT experience. The gruyere-and-gluten combo is impossible to put down; BLT Steak knows this, which is why they include a recipe card so you can recreate them at home. Just leave it to the pros, though, since you’re going to become a regular anyway.
Why do we say that? Because the food here is that good. Starters like the Snapper Crudo and Steak Tartare Tacos are vibrant in flavor and presentation, so much so that we wouldn’t blame you if you decided to make your meal just a bunch of appetizers. The highlight, though, was easily the Tuna Tartare with avocado and soy-lime dressing. One look, and you can tell it’s going to be delicious (and it is).
While those particular bites lean on the lighter and brighter side, diners seeking richness have their fair share of choices, including Foie Gras Empanadas that take your taste buds on a joyride. After trying all of these tasty bites, we had to temper our expectations a little bit. In the past, we’ve been scarred by restaurants where the appetizers start the meal strong and then the following courses fall flat.
Thankfully, BLT Steak was able to maintain the momentum and take it to another level with excellent entrees like Crispy Red Snapper and NY Strip. We were pleasantly surprised by the former; at most steakhouses we’ve been to, seafood is an afterthought. Not here: That flavorful fish with Chinese sausage and plum wine sauce had us dancing in our seats. And as you’d expect from a place that touts steak in the name, the 28-day dry aged slab did not disappoint.
For dessert, don’t even bother looking at the menu — just order the Crêpe Soufflé. This half moon-shaped treat blew our minds; we were literally saying “Oh my God” out loud after every bite. Before we knew it, it was gone (but the memory has stayed with us to this day). Another notable dessert is the Guava Cheesecake with passion fruit gelato; you can’t go wrong with either, so it’s just a matter of personal preference.
To say that BLT Steak 2.0 impressed us would be a massive understatement. This was easily one of our top 5 meals of 2017. The service, the food, the parking … it’s all great. When people ask us where to eat in Miami right now, BLT Steak is one of the first spots that comes to mind. And after you try the food, you won’t be able to stop recommending the place either.
