Local foodies have reason to rejoice: Chef Geoffrey Zakarian is back in South Florida. Last month, the celebrity chef opened Point Royal inside the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood. The coastal American restaurant is a modern take on a seaside restaurant, featuring a menu that emphasizes seafood but also includes savory bites like Chef Zakarian’s signature Ugly Burger. No matter what your protein preference, there’s something delicious waiting for you here.
One of the first things you’ll notice is the extensive raw bar selection. Point Royal is home to the only raw bar on the property, and it’s putting it to good use with “On the Half Shell” options like Littleneck Clams and East and West Coast Oysters alongside “Dressed” items like Yellowfin Tuna Tartare and a Colorado Lamb Tartare (a personal favorite). If you feel like splurging, you can opt for one of the massive seafood towers. Godspeed.
The Ricotta Agnolotti, one of the restaurant’s small plates, is packed with blue crab and hits you with a burst of lemon at the end — it’s a nice surprise that made us love the perfectly al dente pasta even more. Of course, we needed to get a salad to balance out all the calories, and the Heirloom Tomatoes and Radishes dazzled us with a Calabrian mustard vinaigrette we’d put on everything everywhere.
There was no way we’d leave a seaside restaurant without some fish, and the Whole Florida Snapper was easily our best decision of the evening. Great flavor permeated the plate — even the grilled Romaine lettuce had us licking our lips. What really sold us, though, was the roasted-tomato caper vinaigrette that — when combined with the snapper — lit up our palate instantly.
Point Royal is one of those places where you already know the answer to “Do you want to see a dessert menu?” Yes, you absolutely do. Repeat these four words: Key Lime Pie Pavlova. This adorable pastry will convert even the staunchest key lime pie hater (aka MFP co-founder Dianne Rubin); the crispy meringue, key lime gel and graham cracker crumble must be experienced. For those seeking something more decadent, the Caramel and Coffee Tiramisu delivers a memorable richness that will have you running for the gym. It’s well worth the calories, though.
Alas, our meal had to come to an end. Despite everything we ate, we hardly made a dent in the menu. Expect to come back for Round 2 (and Round 3) to try all the favorites including the GZ Butter Poached Lobster Roll. Our advice: Get a few small plates, split one main dish and splurge on dessert … then do it all over again the next time. This latest addition to The Diplomat Beach Resort’s culinary arsenal is sure to make a regular out of you.
