We don’t typically wake up early to go out and eat. As much as we love food, we love sleep even more. In the past few weeks, though, we’ve discovered something that’s worth losing sleep over: breakfast at Lolo’s Surf Cantina. The South of Fifth Baja-inspired Mexican restaurant recently debuted early morning service, and there’s enough delicious food on the menu to fuel you for days.
Upon your arrival, make it a point to order Aqua Fresca — a must at Lolo’s Surf Cantina. The sweet and refreshing mix of fruit and water is addicting, and you’ll find yourself downing four or five before you know it. The flavor rotates regularly — ours was hibiscus.
Got your aqua fresca? Get ready to dine with your eyes and mouth. The breakfast menu is diverse, so if you want to eat healthy-ish or kick your diet to the curb, you’re covered. On the lighter side of the spectrum are items like Avocado Toast and Watermelon Salad that still pack a lot of heft. Regarding the former, guests can expect generous amounts of fresh avocado atop a thick slab of toast; it’s a beast. The latter dish sounds simple — it’s basically watermelon, queso fresco, olive oil and sea salt — but its flavors takes your palate on a joyride.
We can’t recommend the Butterscotch Pancakes enough. Even if you’re not in the mood for them, get them because you’ll quickly change your mind. Despite what you may think, they’re not overwhelmingly sweet — they’re just right. And just like the aqua fresca, these pancakes are dangerously addicting; we’ll gladly spend X amounts of time in the gym to offset the calories. If savory’s more your style, don’t miss the Chicken Tostadas: good heat, lots of chicken, and a tasty shell to hold everything together.
Breakfast at Lolo’s Surf Cantina is available from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. every day. While we woke up at the crack of dawn to eat here — blame our jobs — your schedule may be more forgiving. Regardless, take some time to check it out. Once you try it, don’t be surprised if you come back the next day for more.
