There’s a new bar in (Down)town: Jaguar Sun. Located on the ground floor of the X Miami Apartments, this new watering hole — named after a collection of short stories by Italo Calvino — is helping turn the neighborhood around. Those of us who work in the area (::raises hand::) don’t feel the need to rush home at 5 p.m., and residents have less of a reason to head to Brickell for some good times.

We’ve been here probably 20 times already, and each time the place is full of new faces and regulars. No surprise there: Word is getting out that Jaguar Sun is the place to be.

Chef Dena Marino of MC Kitchen: The Design District’s Culinary Trailblazer

Back in 2012, MC Kitchen first opened in the Design District. Three years later, this Italian eatery is still going strong while many of its neighbors have shuttered their doors. In an area not exactly known for long-lasting tenants, MC Kitchen’s longevity is a testament to the quality experience awaiting diners inside 4141 NE 2nd Avenue.

It’s a quality experience that we’ve partaken in several times during the last month. After first meeting Chef Marino at a Common Threads community event and pulling some mozzarella with her, we had to visit her restaurant, try out the food and find out more about her and this Design District gem. So that’s exactly what we did.

Sweet Dogs: Bite Into the Best Hot Dogs in Town

If you go onto Yelp and look for the highest-rated restaurants in town, you’ll find Sweet Dogs at the top of that list. The unassuming hot dog shop, located in a strip mall on Calle Ocho, has been cooking up tasty, unique franks for over two years now.

With a consistent five-star Yelp rating, Sweet Dogs Owner Victor Ruiz must be doing something right. We spoke with Victor about the store’s humble beginnings and its transformation into one of the city’s best eateries.
