Salt & Straw Comes to Miami

Salt & Straw is soaring east to open its first scoop shops in Miami, Florida. These will be the first shops on the East Coast, for the Portland-based, small-batch ice cream company known for its curiously delicious flavors and exceptional hospitality. Salt & Straw’s South Florida scoop shops will open in Wynwood and Coconut Grove neighborhoods in spring 2020.

Taking inspiration from Miami, Salt & Straw’s Co-founder and Head Ice Cream Maker, Tyler Malek, will create a brand new locally sourced menu that reflects the flavors, food communities and local ingredients. The scoop shops will feature handmade classic and seasonal ice creams, with new flavors rotating in monthly, that tell the story of Miami chefs and artisans, including a few Miami favorites such as Panther Coffee and Wynwood Brewing.

Salt & Straw will hire and develop over 20 local team members at each location. The company offers extensive training programs in the areas of hospitality, food safety and leadership, as well as benefits that include access to affordable, high-quality health care, family leave, employee assistance, disability insurance and paid time off for both full- and part-time employees.

The Miami shops in Wynwood and Coconut Grove will represent the iconic Salt & Straw design, with curved oak edges, parquet wood inlay, custom terrazzo flooring and bespoke abstract waffle cone walls, creating a mood that’s both nostalgic and modern. Inspired by becoming a gathering place for the community, these spaces will showcase design direction from longtime partner, Portland-based Osmose Design, in tandem with Kim and Tyler, to create a warm, welcoming neighborhood spot to explore unbelievable ice cream flavors and connect with one another.

Fireman Derek’s Launches New Treats

Since 2014, pie master Derek Kaplan and the talented team at Fireman Derek’s Bakeshop have been whisking up their extraordinary confections in Wynwood. Now, recently expanded with a new Coconut Grove outpost, this one-of-a-kind Miami dessert destination boasting freshly baked pies and cakes among other titillating goodies has announced October’s “Pie of the Month.”

This month, Fireman Derek’s is offering the Pumpkin Pie – FD’s signature, flaky flour crust, creamy, custardy pumpkin spiced puree filling topped with fresh whipped cream, crunchy streusel and drizzled with caramel. The seasonally sweet specials don’t stop there: Fireman Derek’s is also offering a Pumpkin Cheesecake throughout the month of October.

Cradled in the bake shop’s classic graham cracker crust, the Pumpkin Cheesecake is made with an airy filling perfectly spiced, topped with house made pralines and drizzled with caramel sauce. The Pumpkin Pie and Pumpkin Cheesecake will be available for the entire month of October at both retail locations.

Can’t choose between which pie to take home? Fireman Derek’s also offers a “Pie Sampler” for the indecisive dessert enthusiast. Sweet seekers can choose up to six, individual pie selections for just $38++. For a seasonal sampling, guests can combine a slice of Pumpkin Pie, Apple Pie, Pecan Pie and Chocolate Pecan Pie to satisfy those Fall time flavor cravings.

And for those not in-the-know, hold your forks! Miami’s pie palace has developed an entirely new way to consume your favorite Fall slices. A “pie shake” is a classically prepared milkshake with an entire slice of pie added to it—and the best part? You can turn any of Fireman Derek’s seasonal pies, cheesecakes or cake slices into a shake—all day, every day.
