On Sunday, September 25, Common Threads hosted its 2nd annual Cooking for Life Sunday Brunch at The Confidante Miami Beach (formerly The Thompson). Hosted by Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools Alberto Carvalho and Chef Michelle Bernstein, the event brought together the community for a great cause: fighting childhood obesity.
Common Threads, a not-for-profit organization, which provides hands-on cooking and nutrition education to children, families and teachers in underserved communities, is teaming up with celebrity chefs to host its Second Annual Cooking for Life Sunday Brunch on Sunday, September 25 from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Miami Spice is our favorite time of year. When over 200 restaurants let diners try their fare at a fraction of the price, going out to eat for dinner every day is actually affordable. But while the two-month period gets all of the attention, the events leading up to the main event are just as fun and budget friendly. Case in point: the Miami Spice Mash-Ups.
On November 10, 2010, three cousins — Nedal Ahmad, Otto Othman and Nizar Ahmad — opened Pincho Factory at 9860 SW 40th Street with only $6.27 to their names. The local fast-casual concept proved successful, and the trio went on to open a second store at Coral Gables in 2010 as well as an outpost inside American Airlines Arena just this year. With another location opening soon in Hialeah and other franchise projects in the works, there’s no stopping these guys.
On April 19, Cochon 555 is returning to South Florida at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel. The popular pork-centric culinary competition will pit local chefs against each other while guests reap the spoils of an endless feast featuring tasty bites, wines, brews and spirits.
The one-of-a-kind event is a celebration of family farms, heritage breed pigs and the “good-food” movement. Cochon 555 dates back to 2009, when Taste Network’s Brady Lowe created it to fight the lack of consumer education surrounding heritage breeds. Each year, the Cochon US Tour visits 20 different cities and hosts hyper-local events to raise awareness about these issues.
