For the past few months, we’ve been traveling like crazy: Orlando, Chicago, New York, D.C., Paris, London, Amsterdam … The list goes on. With all these out-of-state (and out-of-the-country) excursions, we forgot about all the awesome stuff in our own backyard.
Thankfully, Playa Largo Resort & Spa reminded us of just how fun a sleepover in the Florida Keys can be. Only an hour away from Miami, the Autograph Collection hotel is among the newest developments in the Upper Keys — and one of the most beautiful.
Checking InĀ
Pulling up to the valet and checking into the hotel was a cinch. The best part: Free drinks. Before heading into the lobby, make sure to stop by the drink station to pick up the day’s cocktail or a non-alcoholic refreshment. You have the option of self-parking or valeting, either of which is complimentary. Our advice: Just valet — it’s easier and faster.
The Rooms
There are 144 rooms and suites on the 14-acre property, and our standard queen suite was anything but standard. The cool color palette and chic decor just screamed, “Florida Keys.” We could have easily spent our entire time in the room just relaxing and hanging out, especially with the spacious balcony. There’s a snack bar in your room, as well as reuseable water bottles you can fill up at stations throughout Playa Largo — we thought that was a nice eco-friendly touch. For a little more privacy, you can reserve one of 10 secluded bungalows on-site or opt for the Beach House.
The Activities
Since you’re right on the water, it’s no surprise that Playa Largo has a extensive rental selection of aquasports equipment. Paddle boarding, kayaking and parasailing are just a few of the activities you can enjoy during your stay. If you prefer to stay on land, you can play basketball, tennis and bocce (although we found it way too hot to do any of those things).
If you choose watersports, we can’t recommend the Happy Hour Sunset Paddle enough. There’s just something so peaceful about seeing the sunset on the water from your paddle board or kayak. Plus, free mojitos! For guests who really want to relax, the Ocean Spa offers a range of spa treatments to help you recharge. By the time our 50-minute Swedish massage was done, we were in one hell of a good mood.
The Food
You will not go hungry at Playa Largo. Wherever you are on the property, you’re never too far from a restaurant or bar. Sol at the Sea, the property’s dockside dining option, is spectacular on a nice night with good company. Caribbean influences abound on the menu, and favorites at the table included a lobster flatbread, fish tacos, and a black grouper in coconut curry. FYI: The menu was undergoing some changes at the time, so these items may not be there anymore. With that said, if our experience was any indication, you’re in for a treat.
Other dining options include La Marea, where you can enjoy an ample breakfast buffet spread, and Las Olas Ceviche Bar (self-explanatory). Due to its proximity to the guestrooms, you’re most likely to end up at Las Olas for a nightcap. The pool area has its own offerings, and friendly waitstaff ensure that you’re never without a refreshing tropical cocktail or delicious bar bites.
The Verdict
Even though it’s only an hour away from Miami, Playa Largo is a whole different world. Quite frankly, it’s paradise. The minute you set foot onto the property and get your welcome cocktail, you forget all your worries. Whether you’re trying to get away for an overnight trip, a weekend excursion, or a week-long adventure, this Upper Keys resort has everything you need for an unforgettable stay.
